PAGB Inter-Club Slide Championship

21 st July 2007

Report by Peter Farnworth

Once more the 2007 event was held at the Arts Centre ay Warwick University, but this year, just for a change, the weather was dull and miserable and there were no regrets about spending a day indoors without seeing the light of day. In fact on the previous evening I was checking on the state of the floods to see if my usual route was still available.

This year’s N&EMPF interest came from Worksop and Rolls-Royce so please excuse my now if I get a little bit biased in my reporting. Peterborough were also there but in this competition batting for EAF.

This year’s judges were Don Byatt MPAGB ARPS EFIAP , Paul Keene MPAGB FRPS EFIAP/p and
Ian Platt MFIAP FRPS HonPAGB HonESFIAP

For some strange reason the rules are very similar to those at Arnold – I just cannot think why!

Round One was for 8 slides – the results were:-

1
Bristol 98
2
Wigan 10 97
3
Amersham 96
4=
Rolls-Royce 94
4=
Dundee 94
6=
Dorchester 92
6=
Oxford 92
8
Stafford 91
9
Worksop 89
25
Peterborough 82

Things N&EMPF were looking good!

Second round is another 8 slides, Chris Forster and I were busy returning slides and loading the new ones. Results –

1
Smethwick 99
2
Wigan 10 96
3
Oxford 95
4
Beyond Group 94
5
Rolls-Royce 93
6=
Dundee 90
6=
Paisley 90
7=
Dorchester 88
7=
Amersham 88
8=
Stafford 87
8=
Worksop 87
8=
Southampton 87
19=
Peterborough 81

The total of rounds 1 & 2 determines where you go next and this came out at –

1
Wigan 10 193
2=
Smethwick 187
2=
Oxford 187
2=
Rolls-Royce 187
3=
Amersham 184
3=
Dundee 184
4
Beyond Group 182
5
Dorchester 180
6
Bristol 179
7
Stafford 178
8
Paisley 176
8=
Worksop 176
24
Peterborough 163

So Rolls-Royce were in the finals and Worksop relegated to the Plate but only missed out by 4 points.

Time for some slide returning, and then lunch before the big load for the afternoon session.

Plate competition was first, 8 slides minimum of 4 to be new ones and the results were –

1
Bristol 97
2=
Paisley 94
2=
Peterborough 94
2=
Stafford 94
3
South Manchester 93
4
Swansea 92
5=
Southampton 91
5=
Ashford 91
6=
Worksop 90
6=
Bebington 90

I find it interesting to do a bit of analysis on the results of this sort of competition – comparing the average mark per slide only 1 club failed to improve from rounds 1 &2 and also half the clubs scored as many as the score of the last club into the final. How different would things have been if different slides had been chosen in the initial rounds?

On to the final – 20 slides with a minimum of 10 slides new – a real trial of the quality of the total stock of 40 slides which clubs had to work with, and the results show who had the stock and who didn’t.

After 10 slides the scores were –

1
Wigan 10 122
2
Dorchester 118
3
Beyond Group 116
4
Smethwick 115
5
Amersham 114
6
Dundee 113
7
Rolls-Royce 110
8
Oxford 104

And at the end

1
Wigan 10 250
2
Smethwick 238
3
Amersham 228
4=
Dorchester 226
4=
Oxford 226
5=
Dundee 224
5=
Beyond Group 224
6
Rolls-Royce 218

So that was that for another year, the winners came from the usual elite group which the rest of us could strive to join if only we could get our hands on a set of cracking slides like they had!

The individual awards were as follows –

Judges awards –

Don Byatt chose –“The Beckoning” by Philip Charnock of Wigan 10

Paul Keene chose – “Skua Harrying” by Barry Mead of Bristol

Ian Platt chose – “The Kiss” by Philip Ball of Oxford

The best slide in the championship was “Looking for Deliverance” by Gary James of Smethwick.
