INTRODUCTION TO N&EMPF
The North & East Midlands Photographic Federation (N&EMPF).was founded in April 1955 and is currently made up of about 46 photographic clubs/societies primarily in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.
It is one of sixteen area federations which make up the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB). Each club/society in N&EMPF pays a subscription to be a member of N&EMPF who then pay on a proportion of this to the PAGB. In return for their membership to N&EMPF, clubs/societies receive a number of benefits.
N&EMPF organises a number of events each year.
An Annual Exhibition with classes for individual entries of monochrome and colour prints and general and natural history slides, there are also classes for individual prints. Clubs compete for three trophies with four entries from separate workers within the club. (See Previous Trophy Winners). The selected prints are displayed at a single venue during January each year (usually alternating between Mansfield and Boston). The selected slides are shown at the Awards Presentation and then copies are circulated around 75% of the Federation clubs during January through March. The Federation usually selects its entry for the PAGB Print and Slide Competitions from the Exhibition. (see Results)
The Club Slide Championship takes place on the afternoon of the AGM day in March each year. On average about 12 clubs take part. Each club enters 20 slides (8 in Rounds 1 and 2). The top 8 clubs then progress to a final round of another 20 slides. The winning club receives a trophy, and the two highest marked clubs go forward to the PAGB Club Slide Championship.
The Photographic Weekend is held on a weekend close to Easter at a college or other conference venue. A programme of lectures and workshops is arranged. Where possible most of the lectures invited are ones who would be outside the scope of most individual club programme's. Club members and friends may attend for all or part of the weekend and meals and accommodation are available as required. The costs are a small percentage over the meals and accommodation charged by the venue. There is always time for discussions and socialising during the weekend.
A Photographic Day is organised in the Autumn which is followed in the evening by the Memorial Lecture. The Memorial Lecture was originally to commemorate the memory of Chris and Grace Newton but was extended to remember all members of the N&EMPF Executive who had passed on. A different club each year hosts the event which comprises afternoon outings.
N&EMPF publishes a Directory each year which lists all of the clubs with their meeting nights and secretaries addresses. The directory also includes the names and addresses of the Federation Executive and a listing of local or supplementary judges. The list of judges is in addition to the listings published in the PAGB Handbook which is published every two years. The directory also states the constitution of the Federation.
N&EMPF also publish a Newsletter three times a year which has news and reports of Federation and PAGB events, updates of club, lecturers and judges information and articles related to photography in the federation.
N&EMPF also prepares recorded lectures of slides for circulation around the clubs. In addition to the Exhibition slides, there are two excellent Showcase Portfolio's.
N&EMPF also provides Judges and Lecturers (published through the PAGB Handbook and Federation Directory).
The Federation is run by an Executive committee whose members are nominated and elected from members of clubs at the Annual General Meeting each March. This executive meets five times per year to discuss and arrange the events and matters related to the Federation.
