Heritage Tours at W W Winter Photography Studios

W W Winter is the "longest running photography business in Britain", the origins of which have been traced back to 1852. The present studio, in Midland Road, Derby, was built in 1867 by Walter William Winter, replacing an earlier studio on the opposite side of Midland Road. The studio has been in continuous use since then and, as such, is believed to be the oldest purpose-built photography studio still operating in the UK.

In 2014, the studio received a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant of £51,800 to begin the work of conserving and cataloguing its extensive collection of glass plate and film negatives from the company’s 150+ years history.

This September, as part of Heritage Open Days, W. W. Winter Photographers will explore the theme of architecture. Using images from their extensive archive, the team will highlight the changing face of Derby and surrounding areas, showing how buildings have evolved over the decades – from those that remain unchanged to others that have been replaced entirely.

Keyworth CC is now Keyworth & District PS

Keyworth Camera Club has had a name change and will now be known as Keyworth & District Photographic Society.

This name change ties in with a new structure to their programme that will see them sharing and discussing their own work much more often in a variety of exciting ways. They will have many more opportunities to use their cameras as they’ve included more practical days/evenings that will take place most months, throughout the entire year.

Alongside this new look programme, they have introduced a number of sub-groups covering single topics such as gaining distinctions/achieving greater success in competitions, and undertaking projects.

PAGB Inter-Club PDI Championship

Congratulations to Rolls-Royce Derby Photographic Society who came second in the final round of the PAGB Inter-Club PDI Championship 2026 held at Warwick on the 19th of July. They lost to Chorley Photographic Society of the Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union by a single point.

Derby City Photographic Club finished =9th out of the 38 clubs in the Plate Competition for those not qualifying for the final after the first two rounds. Ilkeston Photo 2000 finished =20th, three points behind Derby City, with Beeston Camera Club finishing =31st just two points behind Ilkeston. Congratulations to them all for qualifying to represent N&EMPF and doing as well as they did against such strong competition.

With Rolls-Royce Derby Photographic Society (yet again) making it to the final they will automatically qualify for next year's championship, leaving room for three more clubs to qualify to join them based on next year's N&EMPF Inter-Club PDI Championship.

David Hollingsworth CPAGB

It is with great sadness that we have to report that David Hollingsworth passed away peacefully at home on Sunday 28th June 2026.

He served as Chairman of Arnold & District Camera Club for nearly 25 years and his passion for photography and the photographic community touched countless lives. David's contribution over so many years cannot be overstated, he will be greatly missed.

Any club which had David booked to Judge for the 2026/27 season, please inform your Competition Secretary.

PAGB Inter-Federation Print Competitions 2026

The Competition was Judged on Saturday 20th June by

David Gibbins ARPS EFIAP/b BPE5 APAGB,
Ralph Duckett MPAGB EFIAP APAGB, and
Ralph Snook DPAGB ARPS EFISAP/s

The competition was for prints in three categories (Colour, Monochrome, and Nature) with each federation ranked and 10 individual awards (best, three judge's choices, and six ribbons in each section.

Up against fourteen other federations, N&EMPF achieved a credible fifth, equal seventh, and equal fifth, whilst 7 club members achieved 9 acceptances, two PAGB Ribbons, and a Silver Medal.

Mileage Expenses for Speakers (Judges/Lecturers)

The government has announced an increase in the car mileage rate to 55p/mile backdated to April 2026. The rate had been 45p/mile since 2011. The PAGB has therefore increased its maximum mileage rate to 55p/mile. For Clubs, the increase is just over 20%. For comparison, the CPI and RPI increases since 2011 are about 50% and 75% respectively. See more details on the Speakers page.

55p/mile is not the cost of running any particular car: it is a compromise rate which HMRC will accept as expenses regardless of the actual car used. PAGB uses this maximum rate as a protection for listed speakers and also to provide some certainty to Clubs when planning their programmes.
